Gems from Shaykh Muhammad al Yaquobi’s Lecture “Visiting the Messenger of Allah” (CD1)

Today I found an old notebook of preparation notes for the 2007 Rihla with the Deen Intensive Foundation. To prepare, we were sent a lecture by Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaquobi titled Visiting the Messenger of Allah.  It’s been several years since I’ve heard this lecture, but it is one that I remember being very helpful in becoming mentally ready to visit Madinah, and that I’ve recommended to others preparing to go on Umrah or wanting to learn more about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. In his talk, Shaykh Muhammad Yaquobi stresses that we are only able to visit Madinah when we receive an invitation to do so, and though I was scheduled to go on the 2007 Rihla, at the last moment my visa application was unsuccessful.  In 2007, this lecture was a great comfort when I realised I would be unable to make the journey, and made my visit to the cities of Makkah, Taif and Madinah in the 2008 Rihla that much sweeter. As always, all mistakes in notetaking are my own.

  • When we come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we come with nothing other than loads of sins, and forgetfulness, shortcomings, deficiencies.  We have no knowledge, no claims, other than being lovers.
  • We are here as neighbours of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it’s a great honour to be neighbours here in Madinah. We come with intention of visiting him, to live in this city.
  • Sayyidina Umar was one of the sahabas who believed it was better to live in Madinah than Makkah. Dying in Madinah is a great honour. On its tenets may blessings be. Anyone who dies in this city, the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him comes to testify that that person is one of the ummah.
  • Be happy that you have reached here, this city is the Messenger’s sanctuary. In order to reach it, must have received an invitation. We are his guests. You have received an invitation. One can only can be welcomed on his behalf, peace and blessings be upon him.
  • He was most generous of all human beings. You are here as guests of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
  • His generosity includes granting us his company, giving us drinks from his basin on the Day of Judgement, coming to us in visions.
  •  What we are asking from him is much more than dunya – akhirah. Worry about akhirah! Don’t worry about your job, your degree,  your children, your studies, your income. Worry about the Day of Judgement. Nobody will help us except what we have prepared for that Day, our good works in this life. The Prophet. This is why if you don’t have feelings for him, you will not benefit a lot. If you’re coming to visit a noble man, and don’t know why he is noble, will come and go the same.
    • The adab you need with the Prophet starts in the heart.

    • Do you know his maqam, his rank? His importance? Are you aware of his favours upon every human being? Especially for Muslims, because he benefited all Muslims? Do you know how much Allah honoured him? Increasing your knowledge of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him is very important. Increase your attachment to him, otherwise you won’t benefit a lot.
    • The Shamail is 400 hadith about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from his countenance, appearance, clothes, hairstyles, gait, the way he prayed, till death in order to promote our understanding of him. There is no human being that is described to us in so much detail.
    • Just take his noble head. You could write a whole book on his noble head, peace and blessings be upon him. The size, it was big. Its shape, was close to being round. His hair, the colour of his hair, Any gray hair? What about his beard? Did he dye his hair? What colour did he use? Did he apply oil? Did he part his hair? Did he have braids? Where? His forehead. The colour, the size. His eyebrows, peace and blessings be upon him. His eyelashes, the length and beauty. His moustache, did he cut it? His eyes, the colour of his eyes. His nose, how high? The light on his nose. His cheeks. His countenance. We have this description and more of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. When you study his description, peace and blessings be upon him, conclude he was the most beautiful human being.
    • If attached to outward form of beauty, then should understand that he was the most beautiful peace and blessings be upon him. His beauty was outward and inward. You must admit that there is no way anyone could be more beautiful. Many people testified to this. Many people who come from West attached to beauty of face, body, form. Very superficial and may take you away from Allah. Core of beauty is righteousness. General beauty is all around you. Specific beauty – there is different criterion in different places. Need to go deeper and see how the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him was perfect on every level. He was created as a perfect human being, peace and blessings be upon him.
    • Sayyidina Abu Bakr was surprised that the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him had a few white hairs, but Sayyidina Abu Bakr was three years younger and had all grey hairs! He was surprised because he found it strange that the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him had any signs of aging. The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him had perfection of body and form. He was the perfect example of the human race. In him Allah summed up the reflection or the manifestation of Divine Names. There is no one who took on the attributes of Allah more than the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him. Manifestation of Divine Names was perfected on earth in the Messenger of Allah.
    • He had inner perfection. Knowledge of everything. Allah says that He sent Prophet peace and blessings be upon him to teach. (..teaching you what ye did not know!)
    • Teacher must have knowledge of subject. The Prophet’s job is to teach the Book and to teach humanity what humanity did not know. What humanity knows is very little. His job was to teach, to purify. So many proofs that he was the best intellectual, the best teacher.
    • If attached to people of wisdom, philosophy, reading, then as an intellectual, the  best person to turn to is the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
    • Society teaches people to care about themselves. Aside from beauty and wisdom, people want to know how much they can benefit from someone So if you want to know about benefit in dunya, there is a lot. His favour upon us is greater than the favour our parents gave us. There is no way to compare favours because you are a Muslim because of him, peace and blessings be upon him. He taught us halaal/haraam, Qur’an, Islam. He made us what we are. Feel it in every minute of your life.
    • We don’t claim to deserve anything because of our sins. If Allah wanted to punish us, water and bread is too much. Need to feel the favour of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him in every minute. There is no one who is more concerned about you. If you’re attached to your parents, know that the Prophet is more concerned about us than our parents. All of the works of Muslims are displayed to the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him. When we do good, the Prophet says alhamidullah. If he sees sins, he seeks forgiveness for us. Your parents would be concerned, but for how long? The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him is concerned about actions. No single human being more relevant for us. And when you make mention of him, its reported to him, except Fridays. On Friday, he hears  his mention with his own ears and answers with his own tongue, peace and blessings be upon him.
    • Our doctrine is that he is alive in his grave and his flesh is as fresh as the day he died. Allah made it forbidden to the earth to devour the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him. Our prayer upon him is to do favour upon ourselves. Obligation for us to pray for others. When we pray for others, there are angels that say “and for you the same.” You are benefiting yourself when you pray or others. When you pray for the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him,  you’re doing yourself these favours but more. When you show Allah you love His Beloved, Allah loves you more.
    • As much as you follow the footsteps of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him, Allah loves you more. Reminder: “If you love Allah, follow me, then Allah will love you.”
    • Loving the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him is the key to reaching Allah. Need to go through the door of the Prophet.
    • Allah loves the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him.  If you want Allah to love you, honour the Prophet, support his sunnah. The victory of this ummah is in her turning to the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him. Cause of its decay is turning away from the Prophet
    • The mention of Prophet is the cure for anything. (ie – you’re angry, you’re in need)
    • On the Day of Judgement, the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him will care for us.
    • We need to understand his maqam. Need to see traces of his rahma.
